My Students

Africa, the Caribbean, Louisiana, New England, Canada, Europe, Tahiti...These are some of the world cultures that are being opened to students in our French classes. As we study their language, we study their history, their present and have an eye on their future.

As they prepare for life after high school in an ever-shrinking world, my students are choosing to expand their minds through learning a second language and experience the cultures of those who speak it.

They are eager to drink it all in, and as they do, they learn to understand not only how other peoples live and think, they are better able to understand their own culture and language.

My Project

Literacy. The new watchword in education. Everything is about being able to read, understand, analyze, and synthesize written material in order to progress and succeed in our world. We talk about it in terms of English, Math, Technology, History, and focus on how we must prepare our children by giving them the skills to be literate. Reading, by definition, is an integral part of literacy. And reading in French is no exception.

Research has shown reading to be one of the most effective means of increasing proficiency when learning a second language.

And with good reason. Reading puts vocabulary and grammatical structures in context, and context helps the brain acquire language more quickly and accurately. Reading stories engages the reader, again increasing acquisition. And, in the right setting, reading teaches culture.

Le Voyage Perdu will help my students do all of the above, as we follow the adventures of Craig and Buzz, left behind on Martinique when their cruise ship leaves without them. With nothing but the clothes they are wearing (even their wallets are stolen), they must rely on help from an islander until they can find a way back home, leaving both them and us to learn a bit of the culture and history of Martinique.
