Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach French to 175 New York City public high school students, ranging from 9th grade to 12th grade. Some students are bright-eyed and bushy-tailed freshman, others are hardened juniors who are trying a new language after a negative experience in another, and some still are seniors who just want to graduate. Several students are English Language Learners, and about 40% of my students have special learning needs. Further, we are a 90% Title I school, which means that almost all of our students are living at or beneath the poverty line.

As you can imagine, learning French looks different for all of these students, from period to period, and from day to day.

However, many of my students speak Spanish, which gives them an extra advantage and connection to the language. After 8 years of teaching, my experience has taught me that making the language both accessible and fun gives kids the various points of access that they need to succeed in a foreign language. So, class involves games, challenges, songs (that I write myself), movies, and competitions. Anything to make French fun!

My Project

Research shows that adolescents usually identify as kinesthetic learners, meaning that they understand best when able to physically engage in their learning. This looks different depending on the content being taught, but in my class, we often use what are called "manipulatives," papers or real-world objects that students can hold and work with. Further, many adolescents report that when they write something, it helps to make their learning more solid and concrete. However, my school is almost completely out of paper and there is no room left in our budget to buy more (for a staff of 75 teachers). Given the socioeconomic status of our students, we cannot ask them for supply donations either.

Without paper to print handouts, worksheets, maps, menus, games, instructions, exams, prep packets (the list goes on), my students aren't being given their best opportunity to learn.

I am seeking a donation of printer paper so that I can print anything and everything that my students need to succeed in French for the rest of the year. I also plan to share this donation with other teachers in the World Language Department, as we are all in the same unfortunate predicament.
