My Project

Studying The Last Book in the Universe helps 9th grade students engage deeply with a compelling narrative while practicing critical reading, writing, and communication skills aligned to SCCCR standards. It promotes both academic growth and personal reflection on timely themes such as technology’s role in society, literacy, and the value of storytelling.

A study of the novel The Last Book in the Universe by Rodman Philbrick can support 9th grade students in mastering South Carolina College- and Career-Ready (SCCCR) literacy standards in several key ways:

1. Reading – Literary Text (Standard 9.RL)

   •   Key Ideas and Details (9.RL.1, 9.RL.2): Students analyze how the protagonist, Spaz, develops over the course of the novel and how central themes—such as the power of knowledge, resistance to oppression, and the importance of memory and storytelling—are conveyed.

   •   Author’s Craft and Structure (9.RL.5): The novel’s use of dystopian elements and first-person narration encourages students to evaluate the author’s choices in point of view, structure, and pacing.

   •   Meaning and Tone (9.RL.4): The novel’s language, including slang and invented terms, provides opportunities to explore how diction shapes tone and meaning in a futuristic setting.

2. Reading – Informational Text (Standard 9.RI)

   •   Research and Connection: Students can connect the fictional world of the novel to real-world issues (e.g., literacy, technology, inequality) through paired informational texts, developing skills in comparing and analyzing across genres.

3. Writing (Standard 9.W)

   •   Argumentative and Explanatory Writing (9.W.1, 9.W.2): Students can write essays arguing whether technology hinders or helps society.

4. Language (Standard 9.L)

   •   Vocabulary Acquisition (9.L.4–6): The novel’s invented vocabulary and futuristic slang offer opportunities for context-based word analysis and understanding word formation.
