About My Students

The four boys who wrote this proposal – Austin, Kristian, James, and Angel – are scholar athletes. They are role models on and off the field and always put forth their best effort. Between the four of them, they have approximately 25 years of experience playing lacrosse.

When I introduced the idea of a student-led project, these students knew exactly what would help their teammates the most. They explained to me how expensive lacrosse gear is and that many of their teammates have to use hand-me-down equipment. When they told me that some boys don’t even try out for lacrosse because they cannot afford the required gear, I knew that this was an ideal project for Donorschoose.org. I am always humbled by the generosity of the Donorschoose.org community.

Our district’s coaches hold our athletes to a high standard. Sports can be a great motivator for students because if a student is failing a class, he cannot participate in athletics that week. Students who are not “making the grade” are required to stay after school to work with their teachers and improve their grades. In addition to high academic standards, our Varsity and JV lacrosse coaches expect greatness from their players - great teamwork, great effort, and great sportsmanship. By providing the lacrosse gear these scholar athletes have requested, you are giving deserving high school students the opportunity to play a team sport which will hold them to high academic expectations and require them to learn teamwork, good sportsmanship, and empathy for others.

In Their Own Words

Lacrosse is a sport that is growing very fast; many people will argue that it is the fastest growing sport in America. If more students had the gear that they need, the game would grow much faster. Lacrosse tends to be a very expensive sport for beginners, which limits the number of kids who can participate in it. In our school alone, there are many kids who are playing with old, damaged equipment. Getting more equipment for our school will allow more kids to play the game.

Sports are great motivators to students to keep their grades up and to succeed at school. Playing lacrosse will give students a reason to come to school and work hard. Increased participation in lacrosse and sports in general tends to increase the morals and attitudes of the student-athletes. Lacrosse could be the drive for many students to achieve success in and out of the classroom. Furthermore, studies show that student athletes tend to have higher attendance rates than non-athletes.

Our school has a rich history in lacrosse. During the last few seasons, our team has greatly improved. Last year our team lost in the sectional semifinals by one point. And if we could get more students playing we could have a better team. If we could get some of this gear it would help out many students in our city academically, athletically, economically, and socially.
