My Students

Supply and demand, stock market investments, and running a business are concepts that can be difficult for elementary students to understand. With the use of two novels by Gary Paulsen, Lawn Boy and Lawn Boy Returns, my students will explore the world of finance.

I teach fifth grade in a small rural school in North Carolina.

My students have limited outside experiences, as many come from lower socioeconomic families. I try to provide a plethora of experiences for my students, with literature and hands-on activities, to make lessons come alive and spark their interest in learning more about their world.

My Project

Copies of Lawn Boy and Lawn Boy Returns will allow for an exploration of the stock market and investments through the story of a 12-year old boy and his experience running a lawn care business. Most of my students lack a deep understanding of finances and due to their family's financial situations, few have experiences with the stock market. Through these novel studies, students will learn vocabulary including stockbroker, portfolio, shares, competition, capitalism, acquisition, and diversification. Students will explore theme and plot development, identify point of view, and make predictions while reading. Also, students will identify three stocks that interest them, research the company, and current exchange rates, and follow the stocks for a semester.

Providing my students with a strong understanding of economics is important for their growth as responsible citizens.

The use of Lawn Boy and Lawn Boy Returns will help my students develop an understanding of the workings of the stock market and the role of investments in the economy. As most of my students will not have these experiences at home, it is my responsibility to provide them with meaningful experiences. I know these materials will be helpful in our quest towards financial literacy!
