Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

I am working with our school' s first-ever student council in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York.

These young men and women attend our title-I school in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn. The students of our student council are deeply committed to enacting change in our school community, and are seeking your support to helping them get their message out. Since they are such a new group they are still a small close-knit group, but they know that the success of the council rests on engaging the larger school community, which is where you come in.

This project will help my students collaborate with peers and adults on the crucial skill of identifying issues that need to be addressed on a local level (our school community). Furthermore, this project will help them engage in conversations with their peers, teachers, and the school leadership about issues close to our school community's heart.

In Their Own Words

Our new student council is devoted to developing and implementing practical solutions to issues noticed by our school community. Some of the ways that we do this involves researching issues, proposal writing, and presenting to school leadership. We are still a new group, and we want to perform outreach to more students so we can recruit them and have them join our group!

We are a student-developed and run organization here at our school. We democratically make decisions about issues we want to research and the ways that we can address them. Since there are no elected leaders for our student council (yet) we collaboratively work together to help out in our school community.

The whole purpose of this project is to be the voice of the larger school community where there is an open dialogue between the students, teachers, parents, and leadership. We are asking for a printer and paper to make outreach to the student body, suggestion boxes to hear directly from the students, and a gavel to call our meetings to order!
