My Project
Little kids love books! What's not to love? Bright, beautiful pictures, an interesting story, and the attention of a loving adult. Why, then, do so many kids resist when it comes to reading on their own? There are many reasons... Learning to read is tricky. There are rules to learn and words to memorize. You have to put in a lot of work in before you'll be ready to pick up even the "easy" Level 1 books. But does it have to be this way? The answer is no!
Decodable readers allow children to use what they know to crack the code of reading - relying first on the knowledge of letters and sounds that kindergarteners practice daily.
As phonics skills increase, the skills targeted in the books increase, ensuring that each child is matched with the book that he or she is ready for right now. With decodable readers, children can apply the skills they are learning in class to read successfully. What better joy could there be?
My kindergarten students are excited to apply the skills they've been learning all year. Your support will supply them with engaging, decodable books that they can read "by themselves." The books we are asking for are not just decodable. They have fun and silly storylines that kids love. In addition, two silly, phonics-based games will help us practice our phonics skills further while laughing and having fun.
In the words of Frank Serafini, “There is no such thing as a child who hates to read; there are only children who have not found the right book.”
Please consider helping my students find the right books.
