Help Mrs. Portee-Wells

Latin is not dead!!! My students are keeping the classic writings of Virgil, Cicero, Horace and Ovid alive. I teach 110 inner-city public-school 9-12 graders Latin. There are many benefits to keeping Latin in the curriculum- higher SAT scores, improved command of the English language, greater understanding of current government and judicial system, etc. Many inner-city districts are phasing Latin out due to lack of interest, funding and teachers. Yet studies show that students who take Latin are more apt to attend college and continue to be successful in life. We want to keep our program alive and strong.

Our district is low on funds. These students do not have the money to buy their own dictionaries. The vocabulary section of our textbooks are limited and therefore, so is the students' creative writing. The printer is also needed because I often copy readings from my collection of Latin texts at home. Currently, I use my own small, personal, home desktop printer and use a cartridge of ink each week. This printer cannot handle the volume.

These items will help make my classroom more successful and prevent the students from being limited by the assigned textbooks.

Many of us remember the discipline of a classical education. Today's students, raised on video games and television, desperately need the cognitive challenge of a classical education. Help us keep the classics alive!
