Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We want to promote the learning of Spanish through the preparation of three traditional Latin American desserts (cake, rice pudding, and horchata). Students will practice culinary and cultural vocabulary while exploring Spanish-speaking gastronomic traditions.

We want students to learn Spanish vocabulary related to ingredients, utensils, and cooking techniques.

We want students to encourage active participation by preparing the desserts in a group.

We want students to explore the cultural tradition of Latin American desserts: cake, rice pudding, and horchata.

We want students to practice oral expression by explaining the recipes and sharing experiences about their preparation.

Students can talk about which of the desserts they liked the most and why. They want to use questions like:

"What ingredients did you use in each recipe?"

"Which dessert do you prefer and why?"

"Have you tried any of these desserts in your country?"

In my exploration of "Latin Desserts: Flavors and Culture in the Kitchen," I plan to incorporate a variety of materials that highlight the rich history and diverse ingredients used in Latin American sweet treats. One key resource will be cookbooks that showcase traditional recipes from different Latin countries, such as Mexico, Argentina, Perú, and Cuba. These will provide detailed instructions on how to prepare classic desserts like Arroz con Leche, cake, and Horchata. The relationship between food and culture, helping to showcase the importance of desserts in Latin communities.

The second important element in my research will involve interviewing chefs and home cooks who specialize in Latin American desserts. Their firsthand experiences and stories will enrich my understanding of the preparation techniques and ingredients that define these sweets. I aim to offer a comprehensive exploration of Latin American desserts and their deeper cultural connections.
