Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a Science/STEM teacher whose students hail from many different countries and backgrounds. Located in the urban district of Newark, NJ, my students don’t always have everything they need to succeed, but somehow we always find a way together to make learning happen in a fun, exciting way, despite these challenges.

Although they face enormous challenges, they are all very excited to learn about everything around them in the classroom and beyond.

They are active, curious learners, who are genuinely funny, creative young people whom I thoroughly enjoy spending time with, both in and outside the classroom.

As our school’s Robotic coach, I encourage students in grades 5 to 8 to join our team each school year. They are all very creative and curious students, who are enthusiastic about all aspects of each year’s robotic challenge theme. They are team players who are not afraid to help one another and learn from each other to complete research, create project boards and a presentation, and build and program a robot to successfully complete game board missions.

My Project

This school year marks my third year as my school’s Lego Robotics Coach. Each year thus far, I have had the pleasure to see my team grow, not only in size, but also in the eagerness, curiosity, knowledge, and ability of my amazing students. I am proud to say that every team member has fully embraced each of the Core Values (Discovery, Innovation, Impact, Inclusion, Teamwork, and Fun) set forth by the First Lego League.

They enjoy every aspect of competition, which includes research, as well as robot design, programming missions, and competition.

Although we do have Chromebooks, they are older and do not support the updated Mindstorm software. Because this software has many new added features, laptops with specific requirements are needed for my students to be able to compete at the same level as their Lego robotic peers. By using laptops, my students will be able to expand their use of different sensors in their robot designs and have the ability to create more intricate programs for their robots to carry out successful missions during competition.
