My Students

The students in our classrooms are a cohort of diverse, intelligent, and hardworking students from Harlem. Our school is a Title I, public, college preparatory school with a focus on raising student achievement with an emphasis on our Special Education population. In a city with 1.2 million students, it is easy for our students to feel overlooked. Yet, our students know they are supported in meeting their academic goals and beyond. Every student deserves a chance to feel great, as their teachers it is our responsibility to give them the tools they need to be successful in reaching their greatness.

Our classroom serves students with a range of abilities, some of whom who need more support than others.

Their needs can be strategically addressed through subtle tools that target their strengths and areas for growth as individuals, without singling them out as different. Our school is fortunate enough to subscribe to many web-based applications to increase literacy levels, however we do not have access to the computers they need (750 students- 100 laptops). Many of our students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and would otherwise lack access to reliable computer-based technology. Their playing field can be leveled with your help!

My Project

These Lenovo Chromebooks are not a one and done deal. This classroom set will support students at our school for years to come. It is not an investment in Chromebooks, it is an investment in the future of the students of Harlem. Our students are at a constant disadvantage without access to computers on a daily basis. The students share stories of friends at schools who can access a computer as needed. We must request laptop usage a week in advance, and when we do receive them it often means that we are taking them from other classes that need to use the technology as well. This weekly battle over resources is one that students should not have to face in 2018.

As a Special Education teacher in a co-taught setting, I know that my students will thrive with everyday access to targeted technology.

Using online programs such as Kurzweil and ThinkCERCA are great resources for students to support their learning. These resources provide students alternative methods to access materials that would otherwise be one or two grade levels above their current ability. Your donation will bring exciting and essential technological upgrades to our 7th graders.
