Computers fascinate kids and make learning fun! Hello, I am a 6th grade Special Education teacher who teaches math in an inclusion middle school. Approximately 50% of our students are special education students and our school serves a high-need community with many families receiving federal assistance. Many of my students do not have computers at home and would greatly benefit from having them in our classroom.

Our classroom needs 5 laptops so that students can engage in online math games, virtual math projects, and participate in journal writing through Microsoft Word. My students often prefer working with one or two partners over working alone which leads to the development of better social skills. The building of these social skills is especially important for our special education students. It is also clear that students in this day and age who are computer literate will have a major advantage in our job market because computer literacy is becoming a huge job qualification. Because many of my students do not have computers at home, becoming comfortable with the use of technology in the classroom will put them one step ahead.

With 5 laptops, my students can work in groups to complete math games that reinforce skills for struggling learners, participate in online collaborative math projects, and gain literacy skills through the use of online math journals. Just imagine one of my students creating and recording her own explanation of how she solved a math problem, complete with video and detailed math work. Think of the success that child will feel and the excitement around the use of such a technology!

Your help will ensure that my students get the support they need so that they go from struggling to succeeding! You will make it possible for my students to gain important social and technology skills that will help make them successful.
