My Students

Having technology in the classroom is imperative if we want to prepare our students to succeed in college and to be competitive in a global economy. We can analyze and explore math models using a variety of strategies through technology. This is what we are currently lacking within our math classroom.

I teach 11th and 12th grade advanced algebra and statistics in a high-needs public school.

A large majority of our students are low-income and minority, and the primary focus of our school is to help under-served students get into and through college. Taking an upper level math course is challenging to many. It can become overwhelming to students if they do not have the support or resources to understand the new content. As our class continues to learn new upper level math concepts, we become increasingly cognizant of the limitations in our classroom because we do not have the technology to support our students’ development. Furthermore, many of my students do not have computers at home. At school, we have just a small handful of working computers and one printer for our students to share, which further complicates the situation.

My Project

We need a laptop so that all of my math students have access to technology within the classroom. I plan to use the laptop in class to help students: collect and analyze data, explore various math models, calculate solutions and graph different representations of solutions, and to utilize upper level math concepts to solve real-world problems. Students can also use the laptop to prepare their math presentations and to help them become more effective in verbally and graphically explaining how they problem solve. All of my math students are required to demonstrate their math understanding in a variety of ways (i.e..., algebraically, graphically, numerically, and verbally) that will help them prepare for college level courses. They need these prerequisite skills to be successful in college, and access to a computer and printer will help them get there.

You will make it possible for my students to believe they can be successful using math in college and beyond through your donation as it will allow us to explore math in new contexts.

Many of my students fear math and do not believe math will be critical in their college preparation or for their professional life, and I hope to help them overcome their fear and to see that having a strong understanding of mathematics will improve their ability to succeed in college and in their careers.
