Our school is a high needs progressive empowerment high school. We service grades from 9-12. We are also an alternative school that provides social/emotional/mental support as much as we do academic support. Our special education population is more than 20% of the school. Our ESL population has 13 high needs students with one ESL teacher, me. Our school is committed to special services and would like to make sure that these students have priority in the resources that they need.

Would you believe our laptop was stolen? Now what on Earth are our ESL students going to do? My laptop went missing and my first thought was, how am I going to teach hi-tech ESL? I utilize this computer for presentations, college applications, power point lessons, visual picture lessons, everything. My students were really sweet and they felt awful about it, but not as awful as I felt when I could no longer serve them the way I wanted to. As an ESL and Special Service teacher, providing kids with an opportunity to use technology is extremely important in order to make sure that they are not left behind as technology and education advances. Feeling a little helpless right now is not making me feel like I can meet this goal of providing special needs kids with the quality education that they deserve!

In this country, students who speak English as a Second Language already face adversity just by language acquisition alone. Providing students with a netbook will allow students to use the search engine "Net Tracker" which will help students know how to access information according to their reading level, an awareness that is essential for college students. Students will build listening and speaking skills by using Rosetta Stone with this computer. Listening skills, the hardest skill to acquire as an English language learner will be practiced and improved by using this device. Entering college on an even playing field is my ultimate goal. Most of my Special Service and ESL students are seniors and we have been working on college essays, academic writing, applications, financial aid and fee waivers. If this project is funded, students from our school WILL be closer to a successful college career.

You will make it possible for students who have lost about 1 month of technology lesson instruction to get back on track with college applications, which is time sensitive and crucial. We all know how overwhelming the college process is, now imagine it without a computer? You will be the person to help an ESL student or a special needs student get closer to college, learning English, utilizing life skills that will help them succeed in life. This project is so important, and I know that you will feel amazing once you receive pictures of students with their application complete and their smiling faces from acquiring English through Rosetta Stone on the computer. I thank you in advance!
