Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a special education teacher in a public high school. I teach 9th and 10th grade self-contained English and resource room. The disabilities of my students include speech/language impairments, ADHD, dyslexia, Asperger's, severe emotional disturbance, and more. All of my students are bright, motivated people who need that extra push to succeed. I am touched and inspired by their ability to face these tremendous obstacles. My classroom is very project based. I always assign a project at the end of a unit to assess what my students have learned. These projects often require my students to type reports or essays on the computer. I want my students to feel proud of their work by handing something that is typed, neat, and presentable. However, it is difficult to require such high expectations for presentation because many of my students do not have access to computers at home. Although my school does have access to a computer lab, other teachers book the computer lab far in advance and it is very difficult to reserve a spot. In an attempt to solve this problem, I brought in my personal computer. My 10th grade students were writing a 4-paragraph essay in response to the book "Miracle's Boys." I allowed students to type the final draft of their essays on my laptop. When all of the students were completed, we had a class publishing party. The students were extremely proud of their work because they were able to type the essay, include pictures from the internet, and create a title page. I would like to have a classroom laptop that my students can use whenever they need to type an essay or do research on the internet. Having a laptop in my classroom would increase the quality of my students' work and in turn, this would boost their confidence levels. My students were thrilled when I brought in my own computer for them to use and I would love to see this level of excitement on a regular basis. Your donation would ensure that my students would be able to complete presentable and typed final projects. Having a laptop in the classroom would help my students to realize the value of high quality work.
