My Students

Picture this, music class, vibrations and learning advanced math at the same time. Technology is the key here! Help kids with special needs meet their graduation requirements through music and an HP computer!

At our high school, students who have failed traditionally at other schools interview at our school for a new start and a place where they feel empowered, nurtured and appreciated.

Our school is an alternative high school where students perform assessment based tasks and portfolio work to demonstrate their learning. We are a HIGH poverty school with a larger than standard special needs population. Students are generally between 15-20 years of age and some have poor reading and writing skills. Using technology at our school is essential to hooking kids into new concepts and learning about subjects in different ways. Moreover, once they are making their own music via this computer, the potential for self-growth, motivation and good math skills are endless!

My Project

This day in age, it is essential for students to learn how to use technology. Unfortunately, many of our students only know how to access online social networking sites and don't know how to use other interesting and skill-based software that will set them apart from others competing in the work force. Our math teacher, Mr. B and our special education Mr. P have spent endless time working on an exciting curriculum that bonds music with math and students will write a thesis paper that they will defend in front a panel of real-life mathematicians and musicians. This experience is not only amazing, but a graduation requirement at our school. The rationale behind this is that as innovative teachers, we must meet students half-way. Everyday, they are listening to music and not making music and not connecting prior knowledge that they know so well into a skill. This project will make kids feel empowered, motivated and successful in an area, math, where about 75% of our students struggle.

We gladly welcome your generous donation to this project.

Your donation will help students get one step closer to graduation and self-worth. Never did we think that we could place a price on something so delicate and meaningful, but with your help of donating this HP computer, a class of 30 children have a closer opportunity to graduate high school and give authentic testimony to other HS kids that math is fun and that they are actually good at it!
