This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember sitting in a circle on a rug, or even sitting with a partner, and reading a book with your teacher? To listen to how the teacher reads with expression, it seems they can make the pictures come alive. This continues to be a foundational reading experience in Kindergarten classrooms!

The next school year is right around the corner!

We are excited to have 25 brand-new Kindergarteners join our classroom! We live in a high needs community, and continue to have more and more families whose English is their second language. For many families, it is their first time entering an American school! And for most children, this is their first time listening to a story, thinking about a story, and responding to a story. Each year, there are more and more Kindergarten classes opening up in our school because the area seems to continually expand. Even though there are more Kindergarten classes offered, the more we grow, the less supplies we get!

My Project

With other donations, we will be receiving a brand-new easel! We are so excited to put it to use, but would love to have a variety of big books to put and read on it! These books in particular are Kindergarten-appropriate. They are leveled, so that the children will be able to read along with the words and concepts throughout the story. The words in these books are BIG and spaced out so that students can develop one-to-one correspondence! These books will be used during our shared reading times, which is when we read the book together, echo read the books, and read the books with partners. We also use them during Read Alouds to dig deeper into the text and understand the story elements and concepts! You can't go wrong with these books, they are also the perfect size for a class-full of Kindergarteners. Typical big books are overwhelming and flop over. These books sit straight and can be used on an easel, or in a partnership during quiet reading time.

This project is a classroom changer!

We need these big books to push our learning of reading to the next level. Without these books, we are limited in texts to read with the entire class. We want our students to be full of motivation and see the joy in learning to read. At the start of the next school year, we can put these books to use right away and continue to fall in love with them throughout the rest of the school year, and for many more school years to come!
