Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have been teaching English Language Learners, mostly Spanish speakers, for the past 27 years. Throughout this time I have been able to learn a little bit of Spanish on my own but there is a great need for me to improve my Spanish speaking skills.

The rewards of teaching Kindergarten are unbelievable.

I get to see such amazing growth throughout the school year. As a veteran teacher, almost all of my career has been spent with hard working, immigrant children. I have consistently taken advantage of professional development opportunities to better meet my students' needs. I have been fortunate to have had very diverse experiences throughout my career. I have taught English learners in Sri Lanka as a Peace Corps Volunteer and as an English instructor in Switzerland. I have taught in several districts in California, where most of my students have been English Language Learners, and I have a Masters Degree in English Language Development. I have also taught English Language classes for parents at my school for many years. I know how important language development is in order for my students to succeed.

My Project

The Professional Development materials I am requesting will help me meet the needs of my English Language Learners. As a Kindergarten teacher, many of my students come to school with limited English skills. The majority of them speak Spanish as their first language. I know being more fluent in Spanish will allow me to better communicate with my students and their families, as well as better facilitate learning for my students. The limited Spanish skills I have make a big difference so continuing to learn more with the help of the Rosetta Stone program will be amazing.

The Rosetta Stone language program will have a huge impact on my students' progress.

My students' parents want the best for their children. Some of them are not able to communicate their concerns and questions because of the language barrier. Often times I am not able to clearly communicate areas of concern to parents. As they continue to learn English, and I continue to learn Spanish, we will be able to help their children succeed together.
