My Students

Before any great things are accomplished, a memorable change must be made in the system of education…to raise the lower ranks of society nearer to the higher. -John Adams

Hello.

I am a seven year teacher veteran who teaches at a Title One funding school located in a low income section of the city. I currently have a high number of students, 30 to be exact on my roster, so this school year supplies are very limited. Another challenge I face is I am an ESL teacher who doesn't speak their language. I face the challenge of successfully teaching them not only English but content for their grade as well. I spend many hours translating everything into Spanish so my 12 ESL students can feel comfortable in their learning environment and not threatened by an unknown language. I would love to give these students the supplies they need to make the connections to the curriculum they are learning. There are many types of learners in the classroom today. Many students need added hands on materials to get a better understanding and gain the knowledge they need to excel in their educational journey.

My Project

By having these items, many of my ESL and ELL students will be able to better communicate with their peers and teachers. They will feel more comfortable with their day to day interactions, as well as the English speaking students. They will be able to make connections to the material being taught by having hands on items for better understanding. By having sight words in English, my ELL students will be able to work with them hands on. By having the themed book sets such as land forms and US symbols, it gives these learners visual aids to go with their reading. This helps students who are visual learners understand better the concepts and facts learned. By having geometric shapes, it will give the students a deeper understanding of a concept that is hard to understand without concrete examples to see. Sight word rings and vocabulary development stations can help these students become confident with the English language and truly excel in their journey.

This project would make a big impact on my students.

When I chose to fulfill a career as an educator, I took a vow that I would do whatever was in my power to reach and teach every child that enters my classroom. To this day I stand by my vow and feel that every student, regardless of language, deserves a great education with the proper materials to aid. I go above and beyond for my students even after I dismiss them every day. I would love to give them some special items to make learning fun.
