Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are eager to learn English as fast as possible since they are coming from countries where English is not their first language. Every day we start with a greeting in all five languages my students and I speak. We then proceed to the warm-up, where students volunteer for a role.

They are amazing teenagers coming from Europe-Italy, South America, and Republic of Yemen in Asia.

Our school is designed for students who have been held back twice in elementary and middle school. The Children’s Aid Society provides counselors who work with students individually on academic as well as social and emotional issues. Both periods we have together will begin with a Do Now, move into an engaging Lesson Opener and progress through Direct Instruction, Guided Practice, and Independent Practice until reaching the Exit Slip, which serves as an immediate assessment of the lesson objective. Students know they are expected to work hard and showcase a “do whatever it takes” mentality when approaching their work. It is very rewarding to see them communicating in any language they know better and using English as they finalize their reading and writing tasks while working collaboratively and supporting one another.

My Project

However, not having our own designated classroom -for now- makes it a bit more difficult to move around with students' resources. We always have to work together to transfer materials from one classroom to another during transition time between periods. Having the opportunity to use the Premium Teach n' Go Cart will make everything so much easier for us since everything will be transferred quickly, giving us a chance to start the class promptly. My multi-lingual students will make good use of the dictionaries we need so much, especially those whose level of English proficiency is at entering level. This will facilitate their code switching and providing them with a useful "right there" resource for translations, not having to waste time looking the words up online, especially when the Internet connection is not working properly. In addition, they will be happy to find a pencil for each one, even if they forget to bring one since many come from economically disadvantaged families.

I cannot stress how important these resources are for them and how easy it will make not only my job, but they will provide them with the essentials every student should have access to.

As a school, we are aiming at boosting attendance and achievement by bringing in community partners to support students and their families. It will be refreshing to see that you-as a donor - will be part of their success, even to a small degree. You will help to give them better access to education.
