Language Development Through Literacy

My Students

Do you remember that one picture book that you had your mom read to you over and over, and over? Do you remember the beautiful illustrations and descriptive vocabulary? Turning the page was exciting and new, even if it was the tenth time you’d read the book. My students have that same excitement when presented with quality literature that helps them learn and reach their potential.

My students have a variety of needs, including speech and language impairments, language disorders, autism, intellectual disabilities, developmental delays, specific learning disabilities, and other health impairments.

I am a speech-language pathologist in a title one public school with general education and special class students. I see between 50 and 60 students each week target the individualized goals that will help them succeed in their education.

Many of my students are from low-income or non-English speaking homes. They lack access to good quality literature that connects them to their world and enhances their background knowledge. Because of their disabilities, they require specialized instruction to help them meet their goals.

My Project

Students must read and respond to a written text within their general education classrooms. Research shows that students with speech and language disorders respond well when their goals are targeted using books. Students benefit from and participate in classroom activities better and connect to their classroom peers better when they can create oral narratives. Comprehension is improved when students understand the episodic structure (the macrostructure) of stories. They also learn about the microstructure (vocabulary, grammar, complexity of sentences) of stories. A variety of goals can be targeted through narrative intervention - basic concepts, categories, following directions, vocabulary, multiple meanings, answering questions, retelling/creating stories, grammar and sentence structure, idioms, and inferences.

Access to good-quality literature and stories is essential to my students' success.

This project will fund picture books to teach macro and microstructure, wordless picture books to help with narrative creation, vocabulary cards to help teach the words that they encounter in these stories, and sequencing cards to help students understand why recounting details in order is important. I've also included reinforcing activities because all of that hard work needs to be rewarded!
