My Students

The Empire State Building, The Brooklyn Bridge, Times Square, The Statue of Liberty... My students love learning about these world famous landmarks in our home city. They need art materials so they can build dioramas to reflect what they've learned.

I teach second grade in an urban school in New York.

Our student population is amazingly diverse: academically, ethnically, culturally, and economically. Watching young people from such differing backgrounds come together to create a cohesive and cooperative classroom community is always an inspiration to me.

My Project

Landmarks of New York City is the culminating social studies project of the year. Each student will select a famous NYC landmark to study. The students will conduct research using books, brochures and the Internet. If possible, they'll visit the landmarks. Then they'll write brochures about their chosen landmarks, and they'll create dioramas of their landmarks, using shoe boxes, Model Magic, and watercolor paints. My students need tag boards, water colors, modeling clay, and other art supplies.

This project will integrate art, reading, writing, and social studies.

The students will research the history and importance of landmarks that are already of interest to them, and the brochures and dioramas will demonstrate their learning. Please help fund this exciting project!
