Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I currently teach 8th grade Language Arts to predominately Latino students in Chicago. My students are a pleasure to be around and very capable. Despite coming from a high-need community, many of my students work hard each day to be the best they can be. With this in mind, I am asking for your support to fund a project that helps my students develop a sense of authorship as writers.

My students are authors. Authors get published. My students work should be published as well. In developing the habits of a true author, students need to work knowing that their work will have an audience beyond the teacher. I have experimented with ways to develop this sense of authorship. The most successful method has been to have students select their best work to be lamented and made part of a class book.

To this end, I would like to add a laminator to my writing center so that my students will be able to publish their stories and writing into books. Instead of me having to organize the stories and decide on the layout, my students will be able to take charge of how they want their work to be shared. The two books that I put together this year filled with student work have been read by nearly all of my students and are displayed within my class library. Having this audience is empowering for my students, as they realize that people besides me will be reading their work. I remind them that their work will be on display in future school years as well (a method for my eighth graders to create a positive legacy).

This cannot happen without your generous support. While I have put books together for my students of their work, it is very expensive and I cannot afford to do it at a level that I wish I could or that my students require. A laminator would make this process much easier on me, but would also make this work much more student-centered (as they would be n charge of creating their books). Your help will make my students feel like true authors. Thank you for your consideration.
