Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach students with intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorders that are ages 18-22. My program focuses on independent living skills and employment skill attainment. My program makes it possible for my students to gain independence leading to employment as well as being able to be alone at home. This allows parents to continue working once the student has aged out of the school system at the age of 22. My students find purpose in their work and pride in their independence.

I am working hard to keep my students engaged so that they maintain the skills they have gained thus far.

Prior to the pandemic to had multiple in school enterprises to gain employment skills. One was an in school gift shop open to all students during lunch time . We also ran a copy center for staff to learn how to follow an order request and move throughout the school building independently making deliveries. We are looking forward to getting back to those endeavors soon. In the meantime much of the work is done in class or via distance learning with a great deal of simulation activities to practice and maintain the skills gained.

My Project

My students all have special needs as all have intellectual disabilities and some are coupled with autism spectrum disorder. Much of my work has to be done hands on. Being able to laminate the manipulatives I use not only help me save on paper use but is much more hygienic as I can wipe down with a disinfecting wipe after each use.

The laminating machine will allow me to create more durable visuals throughout my classroom while making the environment more hygienic.

My aim is to keep my students healthy as the learn and develop. The laminating machine will allow me to do that in a quick and easy manner. I work with my students on employment skills and this would be an additional skill they could gain.
