My Students

Our school is located in Los Angeles, California just a couple miles away from USC. (Go Trojans!) We are Title I school. Our students receive free meals. Almost all of our students are minority students and English Learners.

We are a Transitional Kindergarten - 2nd grade Autism Core Curriculum classroom.

My students are on the Autism Spectrum. Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disorder that affects communication and behavior. Students with autism face challenges with social skills, nonverbal and verbal communication, and may exhibit challenging behaviors. This is all apparent in our classroom.

My goal is to give these students the hands-on, real-world, and enriching learning experiences, both academic and nonacademic, that they need and deserve in order to succeed in and outside of the classroom. I strongly believe in building independence at an early age.

Our students come from different backgrounds, cultures, and have different likes/dislikes and needs, but in our room, we are all learners. Each day opens us to new experiences and adventures. Our days together are never the same. Their learning differences and remarkable characteristic traits are exactly what make them so special.

My Project

If I wore graphic shirts, you would see me wearing one that says "Laminate, Cut, Velcro, and Repeat." I am constantly looking for materials for each of my students because they all require individualized materials. I have 4 grade spans, and students in each grade level vary widely in their strengths and weaknesses. Laminating their materials provides durability. I can't wait to get my hands on a Scotch Thermal Laminator!

Students with Autism benefit from repetition and tasks that are chunked in smaller segments.

In a classroom, this looks like students having multiple opportunities to practice skills to build mastery. One way special education teachers provide this opportunity to practice is by laminating essential materials that students use on a normal basis. This also takes form in task cards; task cards focus on a specific targeted skill. Task cards are great to use with students who benefit from interactive activities and are overwhelmed by multiple questions on a paper.
