My Students

I teach sixth grade in one of the lowest-performing pre-k-8th grade schools in New York State. Most of our students receive free lunch and come from less than desirable home lives.

My students not only face challenges due to their socioeconomic background but also due to various disabilities.

Low self-esteem and lack of confidence to take risks in the classroom are things that I battle daily with my sixth graders. When they feel comfortable and welcome in the classroom, they seem to be more willing to work towards, and eventually achieve academic and social/emotional goals.

My Project

Graphic organizers, anchor charts, photographs, graph paper, vocabulary word walls; these are all visual aids that help students interact with the curriculum. These visual aids are often time-consuming to produce, time that could be better spent planning engaging lessons that will help students achieve their goals.

Laminating is a teacher time saver, and teachers can always use more time!

Instead of making multiple copies of the same worksheet, a laminator would allow me to give the students one paper to reuse. In my special education classroom, we use a lot of graphic organizers to help my students participate in grade level activities, even if they are functioning below grade level. Allowing my students to use laminated sheets with dry erase markers gives them an exciting alternative to paper and pencil. Something as simple as that makes them want to participate in the activity.
