My students are Indigenous. They enjoy hands-on activities and science. They come from one of the poorest counties in the nation. Many of them have expressed a great interest in pursuing careers in biotechnology, the medical field, and research biology. Resources are often scarce, and sometimes my students are at a disadvantage when entering college because they haven't been exposed to some of the cutting-edge technologies other students have been engaged in. When given opportunities, they thrive. Unfortunately, many of them never are given the opportunity to be truly successful.
My Project
A Kestrel is a high tech hand held weather station and is indispensable when doing environmental field studies. My students will learn how to properly use a Kestrel and will also gather field data from the use of the Kestrel which will be useful in writing up the results of the field research projects we work on. The skillset my students gain will help prepare them for field studies in college and beyond. Students who learn how to use cutting edge technology and how to interpret data collected will have a definite advantage over those students who do not. Please help my young environmentalists soar with the Kestrel.
