Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher who teaches to students with special needs. This proposal is in regards to the work that I do at a K-3 school where I service my students using small group instruction. Three of my students at the K-3 school are students with autism and six of the students are diagnosed with mental retardation. I also teach literacy in two classrooms which involves 6 students with autism and 12 students with mental retardation. My students are visual, kinesthetic, and tactile learners. Also, students with autism think in pictures. Two of my autistic English Language Learners are non-verbal and have a greater understanding of concepts through touch. Lakeshore Learning has storytelling kits that come with manipulatives that teachers can use while telling a story. The manipulatives are little stuffed objects that help students understand the vocabulary used in the stories read. English language learners understand better when they have the opportunity to see and touch what they are reading about. I would like to do a unit on winter and on mammals. Lakeshore's storytelling kits for books like, ?The Jacket I Wear in the Snow,? ?The Snowy Day?, ?Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?,? and ?Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?? would be a successful addition to my lesson plans. The kids can use the manipulatives to help with reading comprehension, and the manipulatives can be used as puppets to help the students retell the story. My students encourage and challenge me to find creative ways to teach and educate them. I know that they will benefit greatly from this project. I'm currently using a storytelling kit for The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The manipulatives keep them engaged and they're learning about fruits and colors. They are also visually able to see and understand the life cycle of a butterfly. Thank you!
