My Students

My students are hardworking, humble and have huge hearts. Their attitude and work ethic shine distinctly against the background of where they live and come from. Our school is a Title I school where over 95% of the students are on free or reduced lunch.

Our school has a very large population of first-generation Americans.

Many of their families sacrificed very much to give their children the hope and opportunities our country can provide. This, unfortunately, does not always afford the students the luxuries of their peers in other places.

My students persevere and endure against the roadblocks that life throws at them. Hurricane Irma is just the latest. They banded together to help their families and community in a time of need. The positive attitude they maintained and their willingness to put aside their own discomfort to aid those around them is a glimpse into their character.

My Project

This trip will have a huge impact in my students' lives, not only as student-athletes, but also as human beings. My students work very hard year-round on their studies as well as their craft, basketball. This tournament will give them a chance to showcase their talent and compete against teams from around the nation.

My students work as hard as anyone and deserve the same opportunities of those with more fortunate means.

This opportunity will allow them exposure to college coaches and scouts. Participating in this tournament, in this environment could be the break they need to get into college.

In addition to benefits of competition and opportunity, there is also a much more humanistic benefit. If funded, this will be the first time many of my students have ever left their neighborhood. This will be the first time most have stayed in a hotel. The bonds and memories they will form with their teammates from this experience will last a lifetime. The cultural lessons they will gain from interacting with people from different backgrounds and different places will help shape their maturity towards young men.
