This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is typical of many inner city middle schools. There are a few outlets for the boys but next to none for the girls. I would like to offer some girls in our school the opportunity to participate in a team sport, basketball.
I work at an inner city school that has a high poverty level.
Our entire school receives free and reduced lunches. Our students have few outside opportunities to participate in team sports. While our boys have a basketball team, each year I get asked by several girls what team sports do we have available for them and sadly I have to tell them none.
The girls at my school are young, gifted and athletic but they do not have an outlet to show their skills. My school has worked hard to bring up the academic side of our students but has offered little to the physical child. We are trying to help foster the total child so we are trying to give our young ladies a chance to show teamwork, commitment, and build interpersonal relationships.
My Project
With the equipment that we are requesting we could set up a gym for our girls to play basketball sports. Our building is outdated and in need of several repairs. The backboards, basketballs and scoreboard will not only give our girls a place to practice but equipment to practice with.
I once saw a statistic that said "Girls who are involved in sports are less likely to become a teen pregnancy statistic." Giving our girls an opportunity such as this will build their self esteem, keep them focused on athletics and increase their conflict resolution skills.
