Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a Title 1 school located on the south side of Chicago. Approximately 97% of the students qualify for free lunch. When I started working at this school five years ago, the school was being turned around after threats of closing due to low performance. As the new teachers came in and worked with the students, we moved from being a failing school to a level 1+ school. Grades, scores, and attendance have gone up and students push themselves to be more.

Eight years ago, my students were failed by a system that was falling apart, and now, seven years later, they have moved mountains to clear their own path forward.

However, there is still so much more that my students need. They strive to be more and with the support of the school, their families, and the community, we hope to continue to help them grow and reach the futures they desire.

My Project

I am creating a project for a Cricut Joy and some vinyl so that I can create labels for all of my students' materials. We are currently awaiting a decision for whether second quarter will be in-person or continue to be remote for our preschool and sped cluster students, and the remainder of the school year is still unknown. With the Cricut Joy I will be able to label all student materials with their names so that students aren't sharing materials and potentially germs.

With COVID-19 numbers increase, and a positivity rate of 19.6% in the community, it is more important than ever to keep my students and their families safe.

If we return to in-person school, I want to ensure that the spread of germs is as minimal as possible. I teach over 600 students and see over 100 students a day. With students sharing materials it ensures a widespread throughout the school; however, if I'm able to prevent students from sharing materials, my students will be less at risk.

I will also be able to use the Cricut Joy to create labels on the floor to ensure students practice social distancing when lining up and moving about the classroom.
