My Students

Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.

In my specialized preschool program I have students with many different learning abilities.

Children range from age 3 to 5 years old. Some of my students have speech language needs, English Language Learners, cognitive impairments and are in need of alternative curriculum that is adaptable to their individual learning styles. I have a happy group of preschoolers this year who are excited to bring stories and activities to life. We are trying to incorporate more development and exposure of letter sounds as early as possible. Children learn through play and having materials available to them where they can explore basic vocabulary and letter sound pairing naturally will help build a desire to learn.

My Project

I am requesting 1 storage case and 2 alphabet puzzles to work with and explore letter sound connections for my early learners and Pre-k students. In our classroom, we are developing a literacy center, an activity center where students will have access to multiple different items in which to explore letter ID and beginning sounds and use of both. When students join at the center, they will naturally begin to talk about the items they see and hear others talking too. They will begin to hear the sounds their friends are saying, and learn through watching each other pair letter ID and sounds at an exploratory level early. This will give my students early exposure to higher level concepts without the social pressures of answering in a group setting.

Through play and exploring, my students will build their vocabulary, fine motor and literacy skills with these materials.

Also, fostering independent skills and concrete task completion. These are skills that will follow them beyond the walls of preschool.
