Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach kindergarten in a Title I school district where most of our students have never been in any type of school setting at the beginning of our kindergarten year! Kindergarten is an important school year in early learners lives! I would like to help our students and parents be better prepared and more successful, and I plan to do that by creating a KOALA for each of our grade-level students. We will use a special notebook daily called the KOALA, an acronym for Kindergarteners Organizing And Learning Accountability Successfully. Our goal is to utilize the KOALA to help students succeed by practicing their foundational skills!

Reading and math foundational skills are critical to the success of kindergarten students!

Some of the reading foundational skills that will be focused upon by the KOALA are letter writing, recognition and sound production, phonemic awareness, word segmentation, and high-frequency word identification. The focus for math skills will be identifying and writing numbers, number sense, counting, and shape identification. Many of the skills that will be in the KOALA are skills that the students are tested over by our district benchmark testing. Other skills for practice will be name (first and last) writing, block handwriting, and color identification.

Through this project, each of our 75-85 students will receive a KOALA, which will be made up of 35 different pages, each in page protectors, and then bound in the three-prong folder. Students will carry their KOALA to and from school daily. Parents will be involved in some practice skills within the KOALA to help bridge the learning from school to home!
