My Students

Our school is located in Staten Island, New York. It offers one of the largest International Baccalaureate programs in the tri-state area. Typically 60 percent of our candidates earn the IB diploma with all recent IB candidates moving on to four-year schools.

Ours is a Title I school with a 78 percent graduation rate overall, and our IB program reflects the ethnic and economic diversity of Staten Island's North Shore neighborhood.

Many students work their way into the program and, once in, rely heavily on adult mentoring to bring their writing up to the college-readiness level.

To meet that challenge, we have developed a deep writing culture with a commitment to reflective writing across the curriculum. We use peer critique protocols and blind reads to make sure young writers are getting both encouragement and constructive feedback. Daily online journaling is a cornerstone class routine and has become a vital teacher/student communication channel during the pandemic.

My Project

My senior IB students are currently competing in a spring essay tournament. They've worked hard all winter drafting and rewriting their final essays for the Theory of Knowledge course, a key component in the IB's diploma program.

Now it's up to the junior IB students to pick the top essay of the year, weighing essays in head to head match ups and learning from the best of the best.

The goal of this project is to reinforce our writing culture and to reward those who went the extra mile in polishing their final essays. We will award Moleskine journals to the tournament quarter-finalists, reinforcing the importance of reflective writing and daily writing activity.
