My Project

Recently, a pair of New Jersey police officers are facing criticism for how they responded to a fight between two teenagers at a shopping mall.

A video of the fight posted to social media shows two teenagers — one Black and one White — getting into a scuffle at the popular mall, about an hour west of New York City.

If this does not highlight the need for my students to understand the racial disparities within the criminal justice system, I do not think there are any greater current examples.

Two officers quickly run in to break up the fight. One officer tackles the Black teenager and then handcuffs him with the assistance of another officer, while the white youth sits on a nearby couch and watches. Neither of the teens appears to be resisting the police officers. I want to reinforce to my students their rich and vibrant history going back to the African ancient civilization to the Black Church and its significance in creating educational centers within the African American experience.

I want to teach my students about the history of the American criminal justice system by reading the text and workbook plus get them to express themselves in their writing portfolio notebooks. The New Jim Crow was authored by Dr. Michelle Alexander in hopes that this awareness and knowledge will empower them to avoid the possibilities and pitfalls of becoming entangled with the criminal justice system.
