My Students

My scholars are tomorrow's leaders who will change the world. Driven by obtaining a rich education, every morning my students answer the question, "How are you doing today?" with the response, "Hungry for knowledge to get me to college."

When I think of resilience, I think of my students.

When I think of determination, I think of my students. When I think of love, kindness, growth, and desire, I think of my students.

Although my students face obstacles in their daily lives from the reality of living in a large urban city that has been plagued by decades of segregation, my students are the future of Chicago, the future of the United States, and the future of our world. They deserve extra-curricular opportunities that will challenge them mentally, physically, and emotionally to help them develop into young adults.

My Project

I am so excited to begin a yoga club at my school for young ladies to learn about the importance of healthy living! Currently, my school has a limited number of after-school programs. In addition, there are not many free extracurricular sports for children on the South Side of Chicago. I want to bring a new opportunity to my school that will meet weekly, allowing young ladies an outlet to move their bodies, learn a new skill, and form incredible bonds with each other!

Yoga, resistance training, stretching, bodyweight exercises, healthy snacks, and FUN!

When I envision how this club will develop, I am excited to create an opportunity that moves beyond the traditional academic experience at school. I believe that the young ladies involved will look forward to our weekly "practice," learning new skills in relation to healthy living. We will learn both traditional yoga flows and try some balancing poses, while also taking time to meditate during each session. These calming and self-reflective techniques will help the ladies develop socially, emotionally, and physically, which will also translate to their academic growth in the classroom.

Your donation goes to supplying yoga mats where we can do our exercises. We will do basic yoga poses and flows to warm up, teaching the importance of movement and breath. The resistance bands and blocks will be used as we move our body in fun, creative ways! Lastly, your donation also goes to providing the young ladies with a healthy snack to keep them going after a long day at school!
