Help Mrs. Bucknam

I teach 1st grade at a low-income school in the Northwest. We are a Title 1 school, with more than 75% of students below the poverty line. My students have very little educational resources at home. That’s why academic exposure at school is very important for them.

Health has always been the nation’s priority. We need to arm our children with good health concepts and foster healthy behaviors. First grade’s health focuses are body parts, dental health and sanitation. Without good subject-related books, it is very challenging for me to achieve our learning goals. Many children were having difficulty in articulating their health related issues or experiences. I felt bad that I don’t have any health-related children’s books for them to read in my room.

I am asking for a selection of mostly non-fiction books related to health. Ideally I could use one book per month for my students to independently read and respond to for through the year. I also plan to read aloud one health book a month.

Start young, start early, give them a chance and let them shine. How awarding to help our 6-year-olds be healthy!
