My Project

I have about 40 students who are identified as newcomers (new to the United States), ELD 2--minimally developed, and Long Term English Learners.

The students are all very sweet and ambitious in academic success, and I'd love to support their learning with hands-on activities/visual aids against the rigor of the curriculum and the heavy demand in reading level.

IN MATH: my goal is to focus on VOCABULARY INSTRUCTION with my EL students this year. The newcomer/EL students have come in academically stronger this year than the previous year (in terms of foundational math skills), but the gap remains in basic English language development. Twice a week, I would do small group instructions with my EL students for target vocabulary instruction. Visual aids/posters/individual white boards with modeling tools will be helpful during this intentional small group time.

IN SCIENCE: my goal is to provide more EXPERIMENTS to go along with each lesson. We are currently learning about microbiome and human body systems--students learn about the characteristics of living things, cells (prokaryotes/eukaryotes), bacteria/viruses, and etc. We have about 5 microscopes in my classroom. In the past, I have extracted a strawberry DNA and used a thin layer of an onion to view with dye, but it would be cool to have a variety of biology-related experiments and activities to supplement STEAM instruction.
