My Students

In the city of Newark, many students live below the poverty line. Some cannot even wear clean clothes to school and are targets for bullies. Some students are teased and chastised because they were showing up to school looking unkempt. Some of these students were becoming chronic absentees—missing three to five days of school per month—out of shame. We are a Title I school.

At this time in the school year, students are back under the strict in-school protocol, and they need to be compliant with the uniform policy to stay in school.

We still engage them with other models within the classroom and with multiple social media platforms such as Zoom, Webex, Google Docs, and Google Meetings.

I am able to connect with my students in spite of their virtual or chronic attendance. Many of my students are members of the senior class. I am involved with them beyond the classroom by engaging them in positive social change, community service activities, and extracurricular activities. I want them to learn the importance of serving their community.

My Project

The books, Becoming, A Promise Land and other materials will help discussions and conversations about racism and social inequality with previously ordered books: White Fragility - Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism and This Book Is Anti-Racist: 20 Lessons.

Four years ago, I launched a human rights and NGO Club to help students become community activist and world changers.

We visited the United Nations and spoke with some powerful people who are trying to make the world a more humane place for all. We want to learn more about social justice and return back to the United Nations this year.

My students have also read the books "Just Mercy" and "I am Malala".

I teach African American History classes so we will have my students read about and research key social justices advocates.

We will educate students on human rights issues (especially children’s rights) in the US and around the world, so that students gain a better understanding of the struggles that people may face who are different from them. We will educate students on racism/antiracism. This can be part of an anti-bullying campaign. A special focus can be determined by each respective school based on the needs/population of that school . We will connect students with other students from different areas of the US - and the world - (through Google , Webex, or through field trips). West Side’s Human Rights and NGO Club can be a state wide model for bringing unity and understanding of racial division.
