Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember a time when you were a child and an adult in your life taught you a skill which you later passed on to friends, or even your own children or grand children? At Foothill High School we are passing along the joy of knitting.

Although we have no Art teacher, students at Foothill High School have been earning some of the Art credits required to graduate through our knitting Club for three years now, thanks to the donations we have received from donors through Donorschoose.org.

Foothill, a continuation high school, is located in one of the most economically disadvantaged areas in Northern California. Some of our students are parenting teens and attend knitting club with their babies after their parenting classes in the afternoon. One young man shared with me last year, after crossing the stage for graduation, how difficult it was for him to get on the bus with his knitting. I explained that I understood and that I respected him even more for it. Being given the resources to offer these young men and women this opportunity has been a such a pleasure. Please help us to continue with our knitting club so students can continue to earn credits, learn how to plan and create a project, and share in the joy of knitting.

My Project

More yarn, needles, and supplies will enable new and existing Knitting Club members to make blankets, pillows, and stuffed toys for their babies. One student has set the goal for herself of making fifty knit hats to donate to a local hospital for children undergoing cancer treatment. So far she has knitted twenty-five and counting. In addition to their own learning and creating, students are passing along their passion for knitting by teaching siblings, nieces, aunts, etc. how to knit. Students are also learning to take risks by blending yarns, taking on circular knitting needles, making heart shaped pillows, etc.

With your support our fifty experienced knitters and many more who are just learning will continue to experience the joy of creating beautiful things with their own hands.

In addition, they are learning patience, and how to produce exceptional results, which are qualities that promote and support lifelong learning.
