Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The students come from all over the world and from all five boroughs of NYC. They are predominantly Black and Brown, they predominantly do not speak English as a first language, and they are predominantly low-income. They are resilient, brilliant, and kind kids.

Our students experience anxiety at high levels-- from being teenagers in this world, from (for many of them) being separated from their birth countries and from family members, from learning a new language, and from making a home in NYC.

And, because of their income status, they experience resource scarcity, especially in the colder months and around the holidays. Lastly, our students have to re-assemble new communities on the fly, based on their varied backgrounds and histories. A knitting club addresses all of these needs.

Knitting is a tactile activity that has been shown to relieve stress and anxiety and increase focus, all of which benefit classroom performance. The products that are knitted-- hats, scarves, blankets-- are important buffers against cold weather for kids who have to travel great distances on foot across the city to get to school. And, knitting is a community activity-- the process of creating objects together and sharing time and knowledge doubles as an activity that strengthens communal bonds.
