My Students

Knitting is a wonderful skill to share with children. It is good for their fine motor skills and concentration but more importantly it is great fun! Now that the weather is getting colder and bleaker, students have to stay indoors during recess. I would like to start a lunchtime knitting club.

We are a NYC public school and our students are a multi-cultural group who come from many different parts of the world.

We treasure different projects to reach out to our students, and parents look to our school to enhance education with enrichment activities. These days, extra-curricular activities are tragically underfunded in a challenging economy. Young children need activities that will teach them a variety of skills. Knitting is one such activity.

My Project

Creating a lunchtime knitting club would teach students in multiple grades (2-4) valuable skills. While developing their fine motor skills, students can also study mathematical concepts; for instance counting, patterns, geometric shapes, measurement and area. In other words, they'll be learning without even knowing it. And, they will have made something that they can treasure forever.

Now that the weather is getting colder and indoor recess becomes the norm, it would be nice to shake off those winter blues while learning to knit.

Students will love creating projects with their own hands. Learning to knit is an experience children never forget. I hope you will consider this a worthwhile cause.
