This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Children living in an urban setting often don’t have the opportunity to explore the natural world. A solution is to bring the natural world into their urban community.

I am creating a Kitchen Garden Club where students will learn the basics of growing plants and how plants can be used in everyday life for cooking, making natural dyes, paper, and other sustainable practices.

Starting seeds indoors will allow students to grow a variety of plants throughout the year, not only in the high season of summer. This method also allows students to see the whole growing process from start to finish. The materials listed will allow us to create an indoor garden using a grow light system in the classroom. A metal rack with two different colored grow lights will provide different light at different stages of growth. Students will learn what light is best for seeds, leaves, and flowers/fruits. In addition to growing seeds in the soil, students will also grow plants in water jars to create their own mini hydroponic garden.

By implementing the KITCHEN GARDEN CLUB, my students will begin to see themselves as gardeners who know how to grow food and use plants for other sustainable practices. As a teacher and gardener myself, I want to make gardening available and fun for my primary-grade students, and hope you will help make this a reality through your contribution. Thank You!
