Our Elementary School is made up of a wide demographic of students, many of which come from families who have immigrated to the US. Within the school, 7 different languages are spoken: Spanish, Swahili, Arabic, Turkish, Congolese, Kenyawanda, and Trigreena. The diverse population of students in this school consists of 33% Black, 26% White, 21% Turkish, 13% Hispanic, and 7% African.
These students are great kids who are eager to learn, but are lacking many of the resources they need to be successful.
The expansion of these media center will provide them with books that they can identify with and relate to in their daily lives.
My Project
Many of the students at our school are struggling readers. We are looking to add more high-interest books to our library to help these readers become stronger. In addition, since the demographic of our students is so diverse, and my students are from immigrant families, it is important to us to provide these students with texts that they can relate to about concepts of immigration, as well as topics and stories that might reference their home countries, or their cultural and religious identities.
The list of fifty requested includes some extremely popular and "classic" book titles that have been specifically requested by students to add to the library for purely recreational reading purposes.
The library has not added any new books for about 5 years, so there are no books from 2013 and later in our collection. We would love to receive some newer and more relevant books for our students to enjoy. Lastly, we are hoping to find books that our teachers can use in the classroom to explore indepth with their students.
