My Students

My second graders are voracious readers! They love to read both fiction and nonfiction books. Their favorite characters include Pete the Cat, Fly Guy, Piggie and Elephant, and Mercy Watson. They also love to read about insects, space, and plants. My students are hungry bookworms! They are eager to learn and read about the world around them. My class is made up of general education students, children with special needs, and English as a new language students.

My students love to be at school and are like little sponges, absorbing everything around them.

Their parents work long hours, so the children are usually cared for by their grandparents or a family friend. Most of them do not have someone who speaks English at home. Thus, it is difficult for students to acquire the English language.

Due to financial hardships, my students do not have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities during the school year or summer.

My Project

Sight Words are words that are most commonly used in text that children will come across most often while reading. Knowing these words by “sight” will help my second graders be able to focus on the more important content words in a text. Sight words are found with such high frequency that once mastered, students can use their brainpower to actually understand what they read. The sight word workbooks and activities will help my students develop, reinforce and strengthen their ability to identify, understand and use common sight words in both reading and writing.

Sight words build speed and fluency when reading.

The molds and plastic tubs will be used with kinetic sand. My students love playing with kinetic sand and requested more molds and space to cut, shape, mold, mix and dig in the kinetic sand. Kinetic sand helps my students to calm down and relax while also fostering creativity and imagination. The pocket organizer will help us store our sand mold tools for students to select during play time. In addition, the flash drives will allow us to store our fun memories from second grade!
