My Students

The school at which I work is located in the high-needs neighborhood of Brownsville, in Brooklyn, NY. I teach students who really like to come to school and enjoy learning. They clamor around to see the activities that I present and they share my excitement when we do projects. My students are challenged with severe cognitive disabilities, and many are on the spectrum. Most are minimally verbal or non-verbal, but appear to comprehend more than they can vocalize. The children are highly active, easily distracted, and enjoy hands-on activities to keep their attention and interest.

My Project

These Magnatiles will provide more structured play activities as a good balance to the formal lessons from scholastic books and the CCLS.

I want my students to engage in STEM learning in between lessons and during play time.

The students will use various magnetic objects to engage them as they enhance their knowledge of geometry as well as the scientific use of magnetic objects. This will allow them to increase their creativity and expand their learning while occupied with a fun activity that maintains their attention. My students need hands-on activities and learning manipulatives that they can utilize towards that end.

This project will give the children the opportunity to actually affect the world around them as they grow and learn how things work.
