My Students

When rainy days keep us inside, my nine special needs students are ready to climb the walls! The Xbox with Kinect will keep them active while improving hand-eye coordination and social skills while they participate in an age-appropriate leisure activity.

These kids are AMAZING!!

I teach 3rd, 4th and 5th grade children with Autism and Intellectual Disabilities in a regular public school. This year one of the evidenced based practices our classroom is implementing is Peer Modeling and Social Skill Groups. We have paired our students with age appropriate peer models at lunch, recess and during some reverse inclusion opportunities throughout the day. What a difference this has made! We have students who have never really shown interest in their peers, actually initiating greetings and engaging in play with their regularly educated counterparts. How exciting is that?

My Project

When the weather does not cooperate and my students are forced to stay inside for recess they are literally climbing the walls! With an Xbox Console and Kinect, they will be able to remain active, even on those nasty days. They will be able to participate in an age-appropriate leisure activity with their peer buddies. Just imagine the opportunities for reciprocal communication and social interactions!

What prompted me to research game consoles in the special needs classroom was an article in USA Today.

Marc Sirkin of Autism Speaks spoke of the benefits these systems could have for our students with Autism. Our PE teacher at school brought his in to test it out on my class and they LOVED it! They played Dance Central with their peers and the smiles across ALL of their faces was contagious. This project will provide opportunities for exercise, improved social skills, and motor skills.
