Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is very small, as a result the children are part of a very special community where everyone knows each other and it feels like family. Our school is a Title I elementary school with a high percentage of children from low-income families. Some of my students are not English speakers and as a result find a way to communicate and express themselves in a different way through their art.

Students are encouraged to be kind to each other and understand that kindness begins with each one of them.

This year we have a fabulous new principal that is encouraging the entire staff to look for daily examples of students making positive choices and rewarding their behavior.

My Project

The inspiration for this project came from the children's book, "Only One You." The story is about a little fish that receives words of wisdom from his parents when he is about to embark on his own journey. They tell him to “always be on the lookout for a new friend,” and to “blend in when you need to, stand out when you have the chance.” The story emphasizes that even though we are all unique, together we can all make this world a better place.

I would like "Kindness Rocks" to be a school-wide project where all students and staff will paint a rock fish after reading the book "Only One You." Students will plan out their rock fish using watercolors, watercolor paper and sharpies.

The supplies we will need to paint the rocks include acrylic gesso; acrylic paints and paint pens to create our fish on the rocks. The paper plates will be used to mix the paints and paint the rocks. Once painted, the acrylic gloss spray will be used to seal the designs and protect them from the outdoors. All the rocks will be placed outside for all to view and to remember to always be kind to each other.
