This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach second grade ESL. Teaching is something I have always been passionate about. During my studies, I have learned to speak both Spanish and Portuguese proficiently. This has been an asset in my teaching, and helps create an extra special connection with my students.

The school that I work in is home to over 1000 incredible students grades k-8.

Over 73 percent of students in my district are minority students, many of whom come from low income families. I coteach, with two other incredible teachers. Together we share students that are both EL (English Learners) and mainstream (native speakers). I work closely in small groups with my EL students in reading, writing, and mathematics. This way our EL students are exposed to grade level content and rigor which is imperative to their academic success.

My Project

These Scholastic books will engage my second grade students and help them learn about kindness and diversity both inside and outside of school. Two of our units from our reading curriculum include community and community helpers. These books will add to the collection that we use each and every year.

Reading to students in small groups is one of the ways that we make students feel like they, themselves are part of our school community.

I want my students to be able to see themselves in the stories they read and make connections to their own lived experiences.
