Remember turning the pages of your favorite book over and over again throughout the day. Memorizing each and every line based on the pictures and characters portrayed in the book. Imagine the smile that crossed your face.....EVERY child should have that experience with THEIR favorite book or story.
I teach an enthusiastic group of 1st grade inner-city students who come from single parent, low social-economic backgrounds.
My public school students read at various reading levels, but have a strong desire to read. From picture books to comics my kids are willing to absorb and travel to various areas around the world whether real or imaginary. My challenge is simple, we need technology to help us sail, take flight, see new sights and learn new words. Kindle Fires ignite the desire to become lifelong book loving readers
My students have limited access to any type of technology or tablets in the classroom. I am hoping to receive Kindle tablets for my students to explore new worlds and learn new words. The Kindle tablets will not only aid in increasing their reading skills, but they will also assist in developing their understanding of story concepts, utilization of informational text and promoting self growth and self esteem. With the use of the Kindle tablets, my students will be able to take some ownership of their own personal growth and development. They will begin to see a world outside of their neighbor and develop a desire to learn more through reading. My students will be able to develop and construct sentences based on their readings and increase their vocabulary.
The donation to this project will increase my students' use and manipulation of technology, and it will enhance my students' imagination, vocabulary, speaking, listening and reading skills.
Oh, the places they will go with a Kindle to read, will make learning fun and adventurous, you’ll see. It’ll open the door to a magical world of people, places and things to see. Through pictures and words a stage will be set. A stage for the lifelong reader with reality or fantasy to explore.
